{"id":16997,"date":"2016-05-11T12:06:41","date_gmt":"2016-05-11T19:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/goldcopreciousmetals.com\/?p=16997"},"modified":"2016-05-11T12:06:41","modified_gmt":"2016-05-11T19:06:41","slug":"election-year-market-insecurity-steroids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goldco.com\/election-year-market-insecurity-steroids\/","title":{"rendered":"Election Year Market Insecurity \u2013 on Steroids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve written a great deal in this blog about economic uncertainty and how it affects our finances and outlook for a secure retirement. While the world at large is afflicted by uncertainty, here in this country we\u2019re faced with an aspect of the problem I haven\u2019t discussed \u2013 national politics.<\/p>\n<p>The volatility of this election year (and we\u2019re only in May, people!) has thrust us into an unprecedented storm. What we thought would become our traditional quadrennial crapshoot between known-quantity Republicans and Democrats has devolved into a comic opera \u2013 but one with serious consequences. Although we shouldn\u2019t rule out the possibility of an outlier, which wouldn\u2019t improve the market outlook, it now appears likely Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump will be squaring off for the big prize on November 8<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>The big difference this year for the stock market is how the campaign financing shakes out. American voters currently are confronted with two big ironies. The first \u2013 the candidate with the biggest war chest by far, Hillary Clinton, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/big-money-in-politics-emerges-as-a-rising-issue-in-2016-campaign\/2015\/04\/19\/c695cbb8-e51c-11e4-905f-cc896d379a32_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">publicly vowed<\/a> four years ago her bid for the high office this year would include the reform of a campaign financing system that\u2019s \u201cdysfunctional.\u201d\u00a0 Apparently these days, with the dysfunction working in her favor, she\u2019s made peace with it\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The second big irony of the current presidential contest is Clinton\u2019s counterpart, Republican billionaire Donald Trump, is fresh out of campaign funds. Wall Street is supporting Clinton with their cash, if not their enthusiasm; and Trump, with hat in hand, has had to <a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/05\/05\/oops-as-the-gop-nominee-trump-suddenly-needs-the-fat-cats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">appeal<\/a> for help to the same Republican donors he\u2019s been trashing. The Donald can no longer afford to go it alone funding his own campaign.<\/p>\n<p>A Republican who\u2019s broke? A Democrat with money? Who\u2019d have thought? But it turns out Hillary Clinton has received <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/hillary-clinton-recently-raised-more-wall-street-cash-than-all-other-candidates-combined\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more campaign funding<\/a> from Wall Street than all other candidates combined. In March alone she received $344,000 from the financial services sector.<\/p>\n<p>Since the beginning of her campaign, she\u2019s received over four million dollars from Wall Street. Through April, she raised a total of well over two hundred million dollars.In fact, some Wall Street donors to the campaigns of Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio have now switched over to become Clinton contributors.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, on the other hand, has raised a total of forty-nine million dollars through March, thirty-six million out of his own pocket. But, perhaps counter-intuitively, through March, less than one percent of his funding has come from Wall Street in any one month.<\/p>\n<p>As far back as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/trump-or-clinton-whos-better-for-investors-1457157141\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">March<\/a>, Barron&#8217;s quoted\u00a0 Greg Valliere, chief strategist at Horizon Investments and &#8220;well-known handicapper of the political scene,&#8221; as saying he\u2019s aware of several professional investors who are contemplating \u201cholding their nose and voting for Hillary.&#8221;\u00a0 Politico puts it a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2016\/05\/2016-donald-trump-hillary-clinton-election-things-you-should-know-213875\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">touch more suavely<\/a>, saying Wall St.\u2019s view of the current Republican frontrunner is that \u201cTrump is anything but generic, with historic unfavorables that surpass even Clinton\u2019s significant ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s driving Wall St.\u2019s lopsided backing of Clinton?\u00a0 Uncertainty.\u00a0 Every presidential campaign <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/story\/13534974\/1\/4-factors-affecting-the-stock-market-in-a-presidential-election-year.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">causes some anxiety<\/a>, but this one is off the charts \u2013 and again, it\u2019s only May.\u00a0 We still have six more months of this, and it\u2019s only going to get worse.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, the candidate seen as most pro-business has a lock on Wall St., but the big financiers are not buying into the Donald\u2019s red tie or his stiff import-duty, trade-agreement-shredding speeches. Like the rest of the country, Wall Street is insecure, particularly with 2016\u2019s ugly market start.<\/p>\n<p>In general, but especially in this jittery economic climate, those in power never favor a loose cannon. And despite his wide appeal to voters nationwide, that\u2019s precisely how the one percent perceives Trump. So they might just swallow the bitter pill and back Hillary Clinton as the protector of business-as-usual.\u00a0 The question is, while she may be the candidate who protects their interests, how will <em>you<\/em> fare?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that\u2019s one private reason why so many high-profile investors are telling us to <a href=\"https:\/\/goldcopreciousmetals.com\/goldco-precious-metals-blog\/another-billionaire-investor-moves-gold\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exit the market<\/a> and take <a href=\"https:\/\/goldco.com\/precious-metals-ira\/gold-ira\">shelter in gold<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If the stock market had its way, we&#8217;d never elect another president.
